29New York state 1825 census indicated the family living in Canajoharie, Montgomery County, New York (District 2).
Canajoharie is located on the southside of the Mohawk river, about 30 miles northwest of Albany and 15 miles southwest of Johnstown. In 1824, Canajoharie was a post-township of Montgomery County. It had a post office, 27 dwellings, four stores, a few other buildings and the Erie Canal passed through the area. The county had a population of 4,677.
Census notes showed one male head of household, one female head of household and four male children in same family (aliens, not naturalized). Family owned one meat cattle and one hog.
John Lieber worked (conducted) a grist mill and distillery owned by Henry Frey Cox, built about 1770, on Canajoharie creek, with an adjoining 750 acres of prime land. Buildings destroyed by fire 9 Jan 1849, and 17 Jan 1849.29
29Page 2 An entry in the Geisenburg Record (Minden), Lutheran St. Paul’s registry of communicant members, Minden church, page 29, listed Henrich Lieber as a witness to a baptism on 2 January 1808, indicating the Lieber family was already present in Montgomery County.
St. John’s German Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized in 1835 with Henry Lieber and Andrew Lieber among the founding members.
